ESG & Sustainability

Our drive to be Carbon Neutral by 2025.

We have a duty to make sure our practices are sustainable, not only to help the planet, but for the health and safety of our colleagues.

Companies failing to address sustainability are failing not only themselves but future generations. We know that ‘sustainability’ is synonymous with ‘opportunity’ and that understanding sits at the heart of our business.

We’ve set out our action plan to be a Carbon Neutral business by 2025, with initiatives that will improve how we work while benefitting the planet too.

Steps towards Net Zero Readiness

Being an environmentally conscious business goes beyond simply planting trees.

We’re working with an independent environmental consultancy to ensure SWGR is a Carbon Neutral business by 2025 through making changes to how we operate – from leaving home to everything we do at work.

Below are some of the steps we’ve already taken to get us there.

Green Power

As well as making a commitment to the Network Rail Science-based targets Charter, we’ve already made steps to ensure our delivery centres use sustainable energy.

Our head office uses 100% solar power – and we’re not just stopping there. We’re also deploying energy-conscious equipment to reduce the amount we use.

Driving down our carbon emissions

We’ve already invested in an electric vehicle fleet and, as part of our action plan, we’re measuring the carbon impact that brings so we can tangibly prove that we are reducing carbon emissions on our customers’ projects.

Where we can’t use electric vehicles, we’re using bio-degradable fuel to drive down our emissions further.

We’re continually increasing the percentage of electric vehicles in our fleet and will invest as the technology improves.

Walking the walk... and talking the talk

While we have our plan in place, it’s important to share best practice with the rail industry in order to make sure we’re all doing our part to reduce our carbon footprint.

As well as regular forums with our supply chain partners, we’re also speaking at events such as Scottish Engineering’s COP26 seminar to talk about the changes we’re making and inspire others.
